Tinnitus treatment and management options
The goal of tinnitus care is often to identify treatable contributors and reduce how much tinnitus interferes with sleep, concentration, mood and daily life.
Hearing evaluation
Clinical guidance recommends audiologic evaluation in important situations, including persistent or one-sided tinnitus and tinnitus associated with hearing difficulty.
Cognitive behavioral therapy
CBT does not claim to erase the sound. It aims to reduce distress and change unhelpful reactions to tinnitus. Major clinical guidance recommends CBT for persistent, bothersome tinnitus.
Hearing aids
For people who have tinnitus plus documented hearing loss, hearing-aid evaluation is a recognized management path. Amplifying outside sound can also make tinnitus less noticeable for some people.
Sound-based approaches
Sound generators, apps and environmental sound may help with masking, relaxation or habituation. Evidence and individual response vary.
What about supplements?
Major U.S. clinical guidance recommends against ginkgo, zinc and other dietary supplements for treating persistent bothersome tinnitus. See our supplement evidence guide.
